Welcome to Jeff Aikey Racing!!
The 77 team has suffered a great loss in the passing of one of its crew members on Wednesday morning. Wes Merritt passed away from an apparent heart attack at work. This has shocked the team and the community of friends. Wes's racing goes back many years from a driver at West Union, Indee, Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids to his current position on the 77 team as chassis set-up.
Wes ran his own operation back in the late 70's running in the Sportsman division and later teaming up with Dwain Homolar in the Late Model division for ten years. In the late 80's Wes decided it was time to sell out and Dwain bought out the operation from Wes. It was the start of a great run which is still going strong today with Jeff Aikey. Jeff was asked to drive (Wes's suggestion) for Dwain in the early 90's with Wes still continuing to help. With the limited financial backing it was tough for Dwain to have the latest and greatest equipment with Jeff and Dwain running limited shows. Dwain sold his operation in 1993.
In 1995 a partnership was established between Jeff and Dwain with Wes still being the driving force to make this one of the best race teams in the Mid-west. With his knowledge of chassis the first year was a complete success and continues today mainly from the efforts of Wes's involvement in the program. The 77 team has a great crew of people and with Wes's passing will leave a big hole to fill. But they will regroup, take the things they have learned from Wes and be stronger team then ever.
Wes will always ride with Jeff and the 77 crew.
